What is FDW?

FDW is an abbreviation for "foreign domestic worker".

Although most people still call FDWs maids, they are really more than maids: they clean the bedroom and change the bedsheets, etc., like a chamber maid, but they also prepare your meals (like a cook), wash and iron your clothes (like a laundress), take care of your children (like a babysitter or a nanny).

The Ministry of Manpower refers to them as Foreign Domestic Workers. As long as the work is done in a domestic environment, they do it. They may not do it so well and some actually die trying.

The media now and again report on young women who die cleaning windows or hanging out the clothes to dry.
